New Avengers: Secret Invasion Book 2 (9)

New Avengers Secret Invasion 2Here we go again, the last New Avengers Secret Invasion book.  So in the first New Avengers Secret Invasion we learned who were the Skrulls and who were left to face off against these clandestine invaders.

We left off in the Savage Land and that’s where this story begins, with a rumble in the jungle between those who are heroes and those who think they are heroes.  After that however the book travels back in time to explain some back stories; some with direct relevance to the Secret Invasion, and some not so much.

The first story we delve into is how the Skrulls were abe to create near perfect undetectable copies of normal humans and heroes and how they tore that secret from one of our own.  The next story covers how the Skrull Queen and her number two endured the House of M debacle.  The following chapter explains how the Hood and his cadre of villians not only found out about the Skrulls but also how closely to home the problem struck.  And the final chapter of this book details how Luke Cage hired Jessica Jones as a detective to help him reunite with his family and how that led them both down the path of love.

The rest goes into the spoiler section below.

Spoiler

When the Skrulls couldn’t figure out a way to learn the secret of becoming undetectable on their own they came up with a diabolical plan.  They created clones of Reed Richards with his memory somehow in tact and then tortured him and tricked him to come up with the answer for them.  Yeah, I know it’s a stretch but it’s a comic book!

While rescuing Madame Masque from Shield custody the Hood discovered that Skrulls had infiltrated Shield.  They took a captive back to their lair and shot him until he told them everything he knew.  The Hood then detected a traiter in their midst and shot the Skrull posing as the Slug right through the head which helps explain why the Hood and his gang helped out in the actual Secret Invasion graphic novel, soon to be reviewed.

Unfortunately, as far as the goods go… that was it.

I don’t know, I enjoyed the first chapter which was the only chapter that had a bunch of heroes fighting Skrulls.  The chapter about the Hood and his gang of villians was interesting enough and the Skrull research was kind of cool, the other two chapters completely missed the mark.  And the truth is, the meat of the story is found in the actual Secret Invasion graphic novel, New Avengers Secret Invasion Book 2 was just a side dish with very few secrets to reveal and without a lot of action.
