Wolverine: Evolution

Wolverine Sabretooth EvolutionI bought this graphic novel for one reason, it ends here… supposedly.  That would be the epic war between Wolverine & Sabretooth, but with characters that popular and intertwined, you know it’s never really over.

But this book encompasses more than just a slugfest between Wolverine & Sabretooth, it delves into weird Darwinian hypothesis, to the jungles of Wakanda and even back to Weapon X.  And we’ll see fabulous guest stars like Storm, Black Panther, Feral, Sasquatch, Captain America, Wild Child and more.  It’s climactic and anticlimactic all at the same time.

A word of warning, this comic is for mature audiences only.  now, let’s get to the secrets.

Spoiler

Wolverine is tired of Sabretooth’s crap.  Apparently just because a guy gets off on murdering women, he’s a villain.  So Logan heads to the X-Mansion where Sabretooth just happens to be chillin and watching the Spice Channel.  I told you this graphic novel was for mature audiences.  Wolverine tosses him out the window and the beatdown begins.

Before the two brawlers can make it a mortal combat they get wisked away to the jungles of Wakanda where they continue the fight and in between rounds learn that they may have evolved from wolves instead of monkeys.  Yeah, this kind of explains the flashbacks that Wolverine keeps having of himself as a half-man half-wolf creature.  They get a bit distracting.

Well Sabretooth kills some gaurds and takes his claws to Black Panther which gets him locked away, but of course he finds a way to escape.  Wolverine goes after Victor only to get his butt whooped by Wild Child.  That’s right, Wild Child.

So it’s off to Weapon X, for reasons I don’t really understand.  But this time, Wolverine has a posse.  Coming along for the ride are Wolfsbane, Sasquatch, Thornn & Feral.  Before they arrive we are treated to another Wolverine flashback starring Captain America himself.

So inside the Weapon X there is another brawl between Sabretooth and Wolverine and we learn that their is some kind of puppet master behind Wolverine’s fate and his name is Romulus which sounds ominous (I’m a dork).  In the confusion Sabretooth gets away and not only does Sabretooth kill Feral (off panel), he feasts on her. :O

Things suddenly get real and Wolverine heads back to the X-Mansion to retrieve the Muramasa Blade, a sword that creates cuts that cannot be healed.  Wolverine heads back into the Canadian wilderness and tracks down Victor Creed.  At this point Creed is more animal than man.  Wolverine feels sorry for him as he beheads Sabretooth for what might be the final time.

Wow, that’s a lot to take all in.  Was it all I was hoping for?  No, not really.  I guess I was hoping for more closure on their history and not just another fork in the road, but I guess that’s what keeps the readers coming back for more.  Was it worth the read though?  Yeah, I’d say so.
